EURO CUP 2016

HUNGARY

vs PORTUGAL
FIFA RANKING 18   FIFA RANKING 8

TEAM PROFILES

HUNGARY
The German coach, Bernd Storck, prefers the 4-2-3-1 formation and has been keen to increase the team's possession stats in order to take some heat off the defence.

STRENGTHS
Set pieces. Out of the 14 goals scored in qualifying, five came from corners, one direct from a free-kick and two after a free-kick was not cleared properly by the defence

WEAKNESSES
Hungary can, at times, be a bit predictable, with a lack of speed in the final third, but the 22-year-old attacking midfielder Laszlo Kleinheisler could change all that.

PORTUGAL
Portugal are expected to swap their traditional 4-3-3 for a flexible 4-4-2. That would feature Nani in support of Ronaldo up front but with licence to drift to the right.

STRENGTHS
Cristiano Ronaldo stands out – of course he does – but this team are now a good blend of young and old, with players such as Renato Sanches an option from the bench.

WEAKNESSES
Goals, as always with Portugal, and the key midfielder, João Moutinho, has struggled with injuries this spring.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

HUNGARY
Adam Nagy did well against Northern Ireland on debut last September and seems to be improving steadily. The young defensive midfielder has a great work rate and is good at intercepting passes and starting attacks.

PORTUGAL
At 23, the Sporting midfielder João Mário will play his first major tournament. In 2015 he helped Portugal’s Under-21 team reach the final of the European Championship, along with William Carvalho and the substitute Rafa. João Mário is very intelligent, almost always makes the right decision and can play in the centre or out wide. He can appear to lack speed but that is illusory.
