TEAM PROFILES

RUSSIA
Russia finally gave up on Fabio Capello in July 2015 when in danger of missing out on France. CSKA Moscow's Leonid Slutsky took over and his 4-2-3-1 – and man-management – suited the players much better.

STRENGTHS
This team look like they are enjoying their football again. There is speed on the flanks and the options up front – Aleksandr Kokorin, Artyom Dzyuba and Fyodor Smolov – have all been in good form.

WEAKNESSES
The centre-backs Sergey Ignashevich and Vasili Berezutski are still first choice in central defence and that is a concern. Alan Dzagoev's injury is also a huge blow.

WALES
Wales chopped and changed formations during qualification but their favoured system is 3-4-2-1, which saw them win key matches in Cyprus and Israel and at home against Belgium.

STRENGTHS
There is no denying it: Gareth Bale is the Wales national team in so many ways and the main reason they are in France. He scored seven and set up two of their 11 goals during qualifying.

WEAKNESSES
The absence of a proven Premier League centre-forward. Simon Church, Sam Vokes and Robson-Kanu have all auditioned for the role but none of them are prolific.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

RUSSIA
Pavel Mamaev or Fyodor Smolov. The FC Krasnodar pair have impressed everyone over the past season, Smolov scoring more than 20 goals in the Russian Premier League with Mamaev providing regular assists from just behind him. Mamaev has the perfect opportunity to make Russia’s starting XI because of Shirokov’s poor form. Smolov will compete with Dzyuba for the lone striker role; if Smolov wins this battle, he has the potential to be lethal.

WALES
Unless Hal-Robson Kanu turns into a world-beater overnight and scores a bucket load of goals it is hard to see anyone unheralded emerging from the Wales squad. If Joe Ledley fails to make it because of injury, Andy King has the potential to be a more than able deputy for the Crystal Palace midfielder. King was hugely unlucky to have N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater ahead of him at Leicester last season and he was excellent whenever he got an opportunity. King is one of those players who is underrated outside his club and country but not undervalued by those who pick him and play alongside him.
